Welcome to Sunbury West Primary School where all students thrive in an environment that fosters a strong sense of community, pride and excellence.
As a school, we are committed to building a culture of endeavour and achievement across all areas. In particular, our teaching and learning programs provide all students with a range of opportunities and experiences for each child to learn to the fullest of their potential, catering for distinct learning styles and needs. We are dedicated to providing an innovative and comprehensive curriculum that empowers students to thrive in a 21st Century environment and build upon each individual’s skills and social competencies. Our motto is 'Together we learn. Together we grow.' and we strive to work hard with all stakeholders to promote positive home / school partnerships.
Sunbury West has an enrolment of approximately 210 students from Foundation to Year 6. Our teaching teams work closely together to plan for continuity of practice within teams and across the school. Our skilled staff are committed to lifelong learning and the school places great importance in ongoing professional learning at every stage of their careers.
Teaching and learning programs are tailored to meet the distinct learning needs of all students with a strong emphasis on Literacy and Numeracy. We use an inquiry approach to our integrated curriculum, promoting voice and agency as students help to shape the curriculum and experiences relative to their stage of learning.
Our core curriculum is further complemented by specialist programs in the areas of Visual Arts, Physical Education and Japanese. The school promotes 21st Century learning though its STEM program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) across all year levles and BYO iPAD Digital Literacy Program in Years 5/6 area. All students have access to laptops, iPADs and smart TVs and the school has a growing range of Science and Technology resources to promote critical and creative thinking and problem solving.
The school also hosts weekly Music Tuition programs with independent music teachers in Guitar, Drums and Keyboard.
Student wellbeing is of paramount importance to us and the school adopts Schoolwide Positive Behaviours in its approach to Student Engagement, Wellbeing and Behaviour Management. Our practices are well documented to ensure understanding and clarity in relation to expectations. Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships supports the development of healthy relationships, interpersonal skills and confidence. In 2021, Sunbury West became a lead school, recognised for its execellent work in this area, and now supports other cluster schools.
In 2023 the school is launching its involvement in The Resilience Project, which again promotes emotional literacy with a focus on gratitude, empathy and midfulness.
Our newly adopted school values are defined by our commitment ‘To Respect. To Belong To Strive.' and underpin our daily interactions and practices at our school.
Students are further supported by key staff working under the umbrellas of the National Student Wellbeing Program and the Mental health in Primary Schools initiative.
A capital works project for a $10.5 million upgrade commenced in July 2022. Upon completion, the school will boast state of the art facilities, including refurbished classrooms, an art and science wing, new admin building, indoor and outdoor learning spaces and re-developed play areas. By the end of Term 1 2023, all classes will move into the refurbished 'Learning Hub'. We anticipate that all works will be completed by the end of Semester One. The school community is very excited to see the final scope of works come to fruition.
Parent participation is welcomed and we are proud to boast an active ‘Friends of Sunbury West’ (FOSW) parent fundraising group and a committed team of School Councillors. These groups work extremely hard throughout the year to enhance school life and always work in the best interests of the children and our families.
Our school is also well supported by a range of helpers across varying aspects of school life such as canteen and attendance at camps and excursions.
Our door is always open so please do not hesitate to make contact with us if you have any queries or would like to arrange a visit.
