Welcome back to all our families. We hope you all enjoyed the Easter break and had the opportunity to spend time with family and friends.
Welcome
We can now formally welcome Mr Dean Darmanin, our newly appointed Assistant Principal to our staff. Dean’s main roles will be in the areas of Curriculum Development and Student Welfare, but he brings with him many areas of expertise. Dean has spent the past week getting to know students and staff and is looking forward to working with all members of the school community. We are extremely pleased to have Dean on board.
I will be on leave from Tuesday 27th – Friday 30th April. Dean will be Acting Principal during my absence.
Teacher Contact via Email
We respectfully remind parents that as per our protocols, if they need to contact teachers via email, they send it via the school’s account at sunbury.west.ps@education.vic.gov.au
Parking
We have had concerns expressed by community members that parents are parking across driveways. We respectfully remind families to be careful to not park across people's driveways as not only is this illegal and you may be fined by the parking inspectors, but it also may hinder another familiy from being on time to take their children to and from school.
With beautiful weather prevailing, all enjoyed a great day representing our school in their respective events.
The competition was extremely strong on the day and all of our students did really well.
Congratulations to the following students who came first in their events.
Eric Smith Jones – u9/10 50m freestyle and breaststroke.
Oliver Smyth- u12/13 50m breaststroke
Sienna Wells- u12/13 50m backstroke.
Last Tuesday these three children represented the Sunbury Schools at the Divisional Finals. We are extremely proud of each of their achievements and congratulate Eric Smith-Jones and Oliver Smyth who again came first in their events. Both boys will now move on to the Regional Finals.
Well done Sienna, Eric and Ollie!

Principal
Hello to the SWPS Community,
I hope everyone is well and have settled comfortably into the 2021 school year, albeit with a minor lockdown hiccup recently!
School staff and School council are continuing to work on the capital funding plans and will provide ongoing updates during 2021 as the plans progress. As always FOSW are busy organising fundraising activities for the school year so stay tuned for all of the fantastic work to come.
Lastly, congratulations to all of the students who recently completed in both the swimming and athletics carnivals.
Best wishes,
James King
SWPS School Council President
Our interviews will be held on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th March.
First of all, we would like to acknowledge all the wonderful students who applied for leadership positions this year.
It took a lot of courage to speak in front of your peers and outline all the ways you would like to improve Sunbury West.We congratulate all the elected leaders of Sunbury West for 2021 who were presented with their badges at assembly. Already they have shown great leadership. Our JSC have been running assembly over the last few weeks, reading the Acknowledgement of Country, the Promise and handing out awards. Our House Captains took charge on Athletics Day last Thursday, organising their peers and supported the teachers and helpers with each event. They have also been calculating the House Points each week. We look forward to the amazing opportunities that 2021 will hold, such as sporting events and representing the student views in school decision making.
In Prep we have been doing lots of fun things! We read the Jigaree last week, we enjoyed remembering the pattern of words and reading together.
The Jigaree lives in space so we made space helmets to breathe! We have also been practising to write our names using lowercase letters. We had heaps of fun using shaving cream to practise forming the letters for our names and making shapes!
Rhythm
We are learning about rhythm using percussion instruments. The students are using the rhythm of fruit names to make up rhythms in groups and then performing them for the class.
We are also learning new songs and listening to music from other countries.
They use a writer's notebook just like us! We have been saving our ideas in our own writer's notebook and have started drafting stories using a traditional narrative structure (somebody, wanted, but,so). Have a look here at some of our writers notebook pages and drafts of our stories...
This week, the 5/6 students have been working hard on their very own colourful oil pastel designs.
Last week, we looked at some how-to videos where we saw the skills needed, such as drawing, rubbing and blending. We also saw a range of finished designs that we used for inspiration in our own planning process. We saw some triangle, square, rectangular and shaped designs, warm and cool colour designs and we also saw some rainbow designs. Please enjoy the fantastic artwork pictured below.
